that’s right

Go check them out in my Etsy shop

Yep, that’s us.  The kids wanted to get out today and so we biked to a nearby park.  Bjorn in the WIKE, and Svea riding alongside us.  It is currently 34 degrees.  Guess you could say we are a hearty bunch, or maybe just crazy.  Not as crazy as my husband who bikes to work most of the winter (btw, wait for the commercial to load & finish).  Well, on the way back it started snowing and we came home for hot chocolate.  Only in the midwest do you have to bike wearing mittens at the end of April.  Mother nature can be cruel somedays, but we’d go bonkers if we had to stay inside all day.  So, buck-up!

I was proud of my 6 year old – picking up garbage to be recycled along the way.  No prompting, I swear!  It pays to lead by example.  I guess we’re doing something right in this whole parenting biz.

On the Etsy home front:

I started cutting and sewing more Re-useable Grocery Totes for my Etsy shop.  More to come soon!  Check back for updates.

One of my MN Etsy street team buddies, Jane from Glorious Hats , wrote a nice little blog post in our MN Etsy Street Team blog on my Reuseable Grocery Totes. Also, there’s a nice little write-up on MN Etsy’s Allison from ARTitecture .   Her MN inspired handtowels & matching totes are “green” and so very cute!  Check it out!

OOH, and if you’re in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area – go check out Craftstravaganza at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds today, Saturday from 9am-6pm!

I can’t believe it’s snowing here as I write this…. ugh… sigh.

Have a great weekend.

Happy Earth Day!!

It seems like we should be saying that everyday, right?!  My 6 year old asked me, “Mom, what’s Earth Day?” and I explained that it’s a day when we really think about our choices that we make about how to better take care of the earth.  Then I also said that it’s pretty silly to have an Earth Day because we should be thinking about our choices EVERY day – not just on a specific day.   So I guess it’s just best to lead by example.  This evening at my son’s ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education) class I learned a quick and easy way to make a low-toxic cleaner (Borax is mildly toxic) for just about anything.

Here is the recipe for Alice’s Wonder Spray:

  • 1 tsp 20 Mule Team Borax
  • 2 Tbsp Vinegar
  • 1 squirt of liquid dish soap
  • optional – a few drops of essential oil if you like fragrance
  • Add all ingredients into a 16 oz. spray bottle and fill the rest up with warm water!

Easy, and you can even get the kids to help you clean!!  Or I’ve also read that vinegar and water is a great cleaner – also, baking soda too – if you want to avoid the Borax.

On another note, I subscribe to Google alerts and get messages in my email in-box whenever anyone searches or types in the name of my Etsy shop Luna Feliz.   Well, most of the time it’s nothing too exciting, but today I was pleasantly surprised to be featured on the Minnesota Materials blog – one that I’ve never seen before.  They were touting the Earth Day gig and ideas to help create a better world.  If you check out #3 on this site “Ditch Plastic Bags” – You will see that they featured my company as one of the Minnesota companies for re-useable Grocery Totes!  I was pleased that recognition was given to Minnesota companies trying to make a difference.  Because “green” can be beautiful!

So… I’m just no good at this blogging thing, although I keep trying  & hoping to get better at it.  There are so many amazing crafty blogs out there and I feel as though my life just isn’t really all that exciting sometimes.  I have been job searching pondering the idea of getting a little part time job.  I don’t have my heart set on it, but it would be nice to pad the budget a bit.  I have a few interviews and opportunities coming up in the next few days.  We’ll see what’s in store for me!

But anyway – I have a new bag listed in my Etsy shop.  I created it mostly out of a vintage bed sheet.  What a better way to create something than to up-cycle it!  I love being able to re-use things to create new beautiful and useful – and fun things!   These totes are great for groceries, library trips, the beach and just about anything and they are completely machine washable too!

My little guy has been begging for a “race-caw back pack”, so that is going to be my next project.  I am on the lookout for some cute race car pictures that I could possibly use for an applique – red of course, and the back pack will probably be a dark denim since I already have it in my stash.

Otherwise, things here in my neck of the woods are still snowy and we are trudging along… waiting… waiting for warmer weather.  We have hope.

Here are a few new things you’ll soon see in my Etsy shop .  Hopefully they will all be there by the end of the week.  These new items are fun and brightly colored for Spring/Summer!

Check this out!  I was just featured at the Indie Quarter blog based out of Manchester.  This blog does a fabulous job promoting and featuring independent artisans and designers.  (I’ve actually been to Manchester in my college days… “searching” for Morrisey with my London flat mate.)  How silly is that?   Here’s the link to my Indie Quarter feature:  Luna Feliz   Happy Friday!!   Read the rest of this entry »

I am in a little quandry about what to do next to grow my Etsy business beyond Etsy – or more importantly, how much can I realistically do.  I’ve always been one that wants to jump ahead and do it all NOW, NOW, NOW!!  So I’m taking a deep breath and really trying to step back and be cautious.  I met with two friends yesterday, both women have their own businesses, one is working on the craftier side.  We brainstormed and came up with some really fantastic ideas of boutiques to approach with my products, craft fairs, even a few retail venues that might appreciate or have a space for some of my wares.   Also, we talked about better ways to market items and merchandise them with fixtures, etc…  And as we were talking I was having the realization that I gotta get my rear in gear! !  Holy crap.    So I came home all excited and anxious to start moving forward with these new ideas and it hit me plain straight in the head… I still have young children at home (one in diapers) and one in half-day kinder.  I seriously don’t have the time to ramp up my inventory – I maybe get 2-3 hours max. (on a good day) to actually create my sewn goods.   I need to find a better balance and not let the business get out of control. So finally just letting a lot of that excited and anxiety provoking stress roll off my back was a good thing.    There are so many things to think about with a new small business – it’s very overwhelming BUT exciting.
Mama … I’m … drowning…
  okay… breathe….
 But… I’m happy.  🙂

I just had to share a picture of this sweet tote I whipped up the other night as a donation for my daughter’s school fundraiser.  Each class is putting together a basket of sorts with specific themes.  The theme for her class was “books” – anything to do with books that could fit into a basket.  The baskets will be won through a raffle.  I liked this book bag so much – i wanted to keep it for myself! I used a really dark blue denim and accented it with the starburst print. Why is it hard to keep things that I’ve made? Read the rest of this entry »
